My luggage was stolen from baggage claim…but it has an AirTag

Can I actually recover my bag without getting murdered?

We recently flew back from Australia to Seattle with a short stop in San Francisco where they canceled our flight to Seattle because of mechanical issues. The airline rebooked us on a different carrier but sent our luggage on one of their earlier flights so it arrived two hours in Seattle before we did. When we finally landed and went to get our luggage, only two out of three suitcases were there. Mine was missing.

The airline searched the system and showed that it had arrived but was not in with the rest of the luggage; which was just roped off and out in the open. Had someone taken my bag by mistake since it was a common black hardshell case (best case)? Had someone run off with my bag on purpose (worse case)? I began the process of filing a claim for the bag when I realized I had an Apple AirTag in a sling bag inside the suitcase.

I brought up Apple FindMy app on my phone and looked up the sling bag. Well it was about 35 minutes to the south of Seatac airport in Tacoma. Hoping someone took it home accidently and will realize the mistake and bring it back, I continued the report and they also called the port police to file a report. Officer Hilger came and met me and was super helpful in taking down all the details of the incident, contents of the suitcase, and even the location of the AirTag.
